This is a magnificent and exquisitely wrought film, well nuanced and faithful in its adaptation of E.M. Forster’s classic novel of the same name. Director David Lean, who had previously directed such cinematic triumphs as “Bridge on the River Kwai” and “Lawrence of Arabia”, outdid himself with this film, which was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and for which Peggy Ashcroft won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as did Maurice Jarre for Best Score.

Set in 1928 colonial India, it is a story about racism and love. A headstrong and adventurous Englishwoman, Adela Quested (Judy Davis) travels to India to meet her fiance. She is accompanied on her journey by her fiance’s elderly mother, Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft), a lovely and kindly woman who, upon reaching India, is appalled at the treatment of the native Indian populace by her own countrymen. She eventually makes the acquaintance of a very nice Indian man, Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee), who is surprised at being treated as a sentient human being by this Englishwoman. During a social ocassion, in which the usual class boundaries were set aside, he again meets the delightful Mrs. Moore and is introduced to Adela Quested. Enthused by being treated as an equal, he gets carried away and invites them to be his guests on an excursion he can ill afford to a well known, but remote tourist spot, the Marabar caves.

It is a hot day and a long journey to these mysterious caves, and Dr. Aziz and Ms. Quested are thrown together more than they ordinarily would have been, setting the stage for a fateful and strange turn of events, one that would have great personal, as well as political, impact on the parties concerned. It is a collision of East and West and makes for a definitive statement about the nature of the relationship between the native Indian population and the British colonialists. It is a relationship that makes itself most manifest during the telling courtroom scenes, making it a film to be remembered.

This is a very well acted and compelling film, a sterling tribute to David Lean’s directorial talents. In this, his last cinematic triumph, Lean leaves a legacy to be remembered, having exacted wonderful performances from the star studded cast, including James Fox, Alec Guinness, and Nigel Havers. Victor Banerjee is especially compelling as the put upon, well meaning Dr. Aziz, while Peggy Ashcroft gives a sensitive and well nuanced performance as the humane and soft hearted Mrs. Moore. Judy Davis is excellent as the conflicted Ms. Quested.

The DVD itself is first rate, offering crystal clear visuals that do justice to the breathtaking cinematography. Coupled with crisp sound, this DVD ensures one’s viewing pleasure. It is one well worth having in one’s collection.

When David Lean’s “A Passage to India” opened in 1984, some saw it as a showdown between the glory days of literate epic filmmaking and the “feel-good” ethos of the Lucas/Spielberg popcorn juggernauts. Who better than the director of “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Doctor Zhivago” and “Bridge on the River Kwai” to show the film school grads how to make a movie? As always, anything burdened by such mythic expectations is bound to fail (”Phantom Menace” anyone?) Sadly, I joined the chorus of detractors lamenting “Passage” as a poor shadow of the “Leanscapes” that catapulted “Lawrence” and “Zhivago” into film history.

Amazing how age softens perspective. A fresh viewing of “Passage,” courtesy of Columbia TriStar Home Video’s new DVD, reveals an eloquent adaptation of E.M. Forster’s complex novel about British colonialism in 1928 India and the cultural and sensual abysses that separate men and women, English and Indian, sensualist and ascetic.

“Passage” tells the story of Adela Quested (Judy Davis) en route to India to visit her fiancé, Ronny Heslop (Nigel Havers). Traveling with Heslop’s mother, Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft, in an Oscar-winning performance), Adela arrives in the city of Chandrapore to find an alien environment, yet evocative in a way she cannot fathom. Mrs. Moore is similarly captivated by India, but is less than admiring of the treatment of the Indians by their colonial masters, i.e. her peers. One night, Mrs. Moore visits an abandoned mosque. There, she encounters local physician Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee). At first he charges her with blasphemy, entering a holy place improperly. When she assures him that she showed due respect by removing her shoes before entering, the two strike a friendship that might signal some understanding between the two cultures.

At a lunch party given by British teacher Richard Fielding (James Fox), who does not share his countrymen’s disrespect for India, Adela meets Aziz for the first time while Mrs. Moore and Fielding converse about metaphysics with Professor Godbole (Alec Guinness, donning yet another disguise for Lean), a Brahmin mystic. Adela is fascinated by Aziz’s juggling of their two societies. In an effort to impress Adela and fit in as more of an Englishman, Aziz impulsively calls for an expedition to the mysterious Marabar caves outside town.

What at first seems (to both sides) a breach of etiquette turns sinister when Aziz is accused by Adela of attempting to rape her during a visit to one of the caves. Now seen as a political tool by both sides, Aziz’s trial threatens to escalate resentment into outright bloodshed. As everyone tries to solve the riddle of what really happened, Aziz and Adela must find some way to break away from the societal and cultural maelstroms threatening their freedom.

Adhering closely to the Forster novel, Lean’s screenplay adaptation finds greater interest (and rightly so) in the circumstances that led to the incident as well as the aftermath. Davis’ Adela is repressed and cloistered comfortably within British society. Both Aziz and India arouses her, awakening sensual feelings capable of enlightenment…or destruction. Lean visualizes this conflict with a scene not in the book. When Adela goes bicycling outside the city (Chapter 8), she comes across the ruins of an ancient temple. Almost voyeur-like, she spies the numerous statues of couples having sex. Adela herself almost reaches a fever pitch when wild monkeys literally expel her from their feral sanctuary. The lack of respect that Adela showed in her judgment is a direct contrast to Mrs. Moore’s deference when she enters the mosque and meets Aziz. Yet Lean gave us the conflict in purely visual terms, no less grand than the match-to-sunrise jump cut in “Lawrence” or the endless icy tundras of “Zhivago. “Passage” proved a worthy valediction to Lean’s career. Between directing, scripting and editing the film, we see Lean in complete command in his storytelling faculties. Even the final scene, straight out of the book, works better in the film than on the page.

The transfer also succeeds on every level. The 1.85 anamorphic image is rock solid and sharp throughout the presentation. (Politics at the time forced Lean to shoot the film in the more TV-friendly 1.85 aspect ratio instead of the wider 2.35 Cinemascope format. Back in 1984, this compromise seemed outrageous. Again, after watching the film, I found Lean’s “flat” framing just as carefully composed as anything on his ultra-wide canvas.) The source materials are in terrific shape, as there are no blemishes and defects visible. Colors are rich and vivid but natural. Deep blacks and careful contrast control provide excellent detail delineation. Digital and compression artifacts are completely absent.

The Dolby Surround audio plays adequately; to be expected as the sound mix is not particularly flashy to begin with. Maurice Jarre’s score, which weaves Hindu music with Cole Porter-esque rhythm, never overpowers the dialogue or sound effects. Surround channel activity is relegated primarily to music fill. French and Spanish mono tracks are also available on the disc.

The main perk of the special features is a section entitled “Reflections on David Lean.” While the title implies a testimonial to David by his peers, it’s actually an eight-minute collection of soundbites, shot on video, from David about the making of “Passage” and some thoughts about such collaborators as William Holden and Alec Guinness. There’s no identification of the source or circumstances of the observations, but he’s never less than fascinating when talking about the difficulties of shooting in India or how Forster wouldn’t let grant the movie rights because he “distrusted filmmaking.”

Trailers from “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Bridge on the River Kwai,” and “Guns of Navarone” appear on the disc, mirroring the same trailers available on the “Lawrence” DVD. Again, no “Passage” trailer (Did Columbia not create one back in ‘84?) The trailers are letterboxed with decent audio and video.

The European release of this film was 106 minutes. This version was cut down to 92 minutes for North American audiences, both to make it more acceptable to short attention spans and to eliminate some of the scenes that included nudity. For those of us who are capable of sitting still for 106 minutes and who are not horrified by the nude body employed in the presentation of a film such as this one, this is nothing less than insulting. Serious viewers of film should be able to see films as the director intended them to be seen, and should not settle for this sort of censorship.

Malena is rich and beautiful film, starring the very fine Monica Bellucci in the title role. It is essentially three films in one, it contains the story of a woman who lost her husband to war, the coming of age of a young boy and also how Facism and war affected the Italian people.

Alot of other reviewers have summed up the plot and made valid comments, so I will only speak of the horrid DVD presentation. Being a huge fan of both the film and Bellucci, I wanted the single best DVD version and I’m afraid to say that this one is far from it! Miramax claim to be an independant and artistly geared studio, yeah right, they have dramaticly censored MANY great scenes from this film. Anyone not as repressed as the suits down at Miramax HQ should look into purchasing the NTSC Korean 2-Disc release. It is the ONLY completely uncut (a few minutes short than the Italian DVD due to PAL to NTSC conversion) DVD with English subtitles. The Italian disc is uncut but doesn’t contain English subtitles, so it would only be good for Italian Speakers. Believe me once you see just how much this DVD is missing (over 13 min shorter than Korean NTSC, 16 min shorter than Italian PAL) you will be glad you put in the extra effort to get a real Malena DVD.

PS to the reviewer who thought that the beating of Malena scene was unrealistic or over exagerated for the film’s sake, read a histroy book some time! Women who “went with Germans” were beaten, had their heads shaved and sometimes even killed in towns all over Italy and France the second the town was liberated.

I remember “The Sword in the Stone” as a widescreen movie, so I was dismayed to find that Disney had released this animated favorite to DVD in a cropped/pan-and-scan format. However, on further investigation, I discovered that, to my surprise, “The Sword in the Stone” was not a widescreen motion picture… at least not originally. Apparently, like “101 Dalmations” and other films of the late 1950s and early 1960s, “The Sword in the Stone” was made to be projected in one of two formats: either widescreen or full-frame, depending on the theater where it was shown. It seems that the Disney animators designed the film with a bit of ‘extra picture’ at the top and bottom of each frame; that way this ‘extra’ could be cut off without ruining the image in theaters playing it in widescreen. In other theaters, and on television, the film could be shown in a standard full-frame (1.33:1) format. So, according to Disney, the current full-frame DVD of “TSITS” is indeed the film in it’s “original format’. Admittedly, it may not be the way that most of us remember this great little movie, but it is the way the folks at Disney made it.

Sometime in the medieval ages, there is a legend about this magic stone that contains a sword and according to the legend, who so pulls out the sword from the anvil shall become king of all England. Though many tried to pull it, no miracle and the sword was forgotten for ages in an age of no laws, brutality and darkness in just which magician Merlin has trouble with the days of no kings, he then meets a young squire named “Wart” ( a.k.a. Arthur) whom is a problemic young man with a mean foster father and big foster brother, Merlin then trains Wart through education in order to become more social and on adventures that will lead him to pull the sword out of the stone.

An underrated disney classic that is a delightful story with good animation for it’s time, nice songs like “Higitus Figitus” and humor makes this a definite must have for the animation DVD collector everywhere.

Ahh, the Mythbusters: if you haven’t stumbled upon this indicate on the Discovery Channel yet, what are you waiting for? Over the years, Adam and Jamie (and Tory, Grant, and Kari) have thoroughly tackled some of our greatest urban myths, legends, and simply bizarre ideas, using their big areas of knowlege in the sciences. Watching an episode is like watching the scientific device at work, and the personalities of Adam and Jamie manufacture the point to extremely intelligent. The projects they do are mammoth for kids to gape (although sometimes their language might not be appropriate for young people, depending on how uptight you are about that sort of thing) because they explain how working through a dilemma can lead to very though-provoking results. I’ve learned a lot by watching this reveal.

This DVD situation is very bare-bones. Only one behind-the-scenes feature, no commentaries, impartial full-length episodes (I consider there may be some extra footage thrown in here and there; there are a couple miniature experiments that I don’t remember seeing from the TV version) . Plus, the episodes they chose for the station seem kind of arbitrary, honest random ones from seasons 2 and 3. However, the fresh vulgar stamp is Remarkable better than the $60 or so you broken-down to have to pay at the Discovery Channel website. I recommend this dwelling to anyone who has ever been spicy about their world. You will not be disappointed.

I found it queer that there is no list of episodes, but decided to order the space anyway. I wasn’t disappointed: there is some titanic classic stuff in this residence. The episodes are 1 – 6, 34, 36, 37, 40 and 43 and the shop till you plunge and MythBusters revealed specials. [...] There doesn’t seem to be any dwelling coding on the DVDs.

The episodes witness very top-notch, but sometimes I got the impression that the material wasn’t filmed with widescreen viewing in mind, the framing can be on the claustrophobic side. (I.e., zoomed in a bit too far.) The earlier episodes have the myths one after the other, and you can bewitch which one you want to glimpse. This is gigantic. Unfortunately, in the later episodes we derive the more familiar interweaving of the myths so you only gather to win the beginning of the chronicle you want to spy but when the program switches to another narrative you have to posthaste forward manually, there are no additional chapter stops.

Fritz Lang was one of the world’s directing treasures, yet too few people know his name. With credits such as M, Metropolis, The Woman in the Window and The Expansive Heat (as well as many bright lesser-known, often German-language films), he helped to *invent* many genre conventions that are now cliches. He is also one of two filmmakers who really influenced Hitchcock in concrete ways (Val Lewton being the other) .

In many ways Veil and Dagger is ahead of its time, and in others it is disappointingly dated. It offers several titanic scenes but loses its diagram several times as well. It starts out with some overly pretentious scenes as American nuclear scientist Gary Cooper is approached to aid the Allies rescue a colorful scientist held slow enemy lines. Then there are a couple of nice fights and some obedient direction and rising suspense as the mission gets underway. Then, it becomes a legend of Gary Cooper meeting and falling in cherish with Lilli Palmer, a devoted but despondent member of the Italian underground fighting in WW2. But this is not really the tale that the early portions had been building up to, so while the middle allotment is not unpleasant, it is slower and seems out-of-place. Then when we return to the action of the Allied team rescuing a scientist held by fascists (none of which we seek, hurting the film a lot), the impressive final shootout lacks the impact it should have had. And the movie takes a mercurial, easy plan out of the residence, nullifying great of the suspense that had again been achieved and leaving a sour taste.

So despite all its petite triumphs, Shroud and Dagger has to be classified a near- miss.

P.S. The best scene involves a struggle between Cooper and someone who has found him out. He has to retain the man from shouting for benefit to the policeman factual outside. And then a minute girl’s ball bounces down the steps toward them, and she runs to retrieve it. How will our hero regain out of this rapidly and quietly enough to neither alert the cop nor do the girl bellow…? It’s admittedly astronomical, edge-of-your- seat stuff, to rival any one scene in Hitch’s canon.

As the title suggests, Conceal AND DAGGER (1946) is a inspect movie that fictionally depicts the exploits of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), the intelligence arm of the US Army and the precursor of CIA. In this movie director Fritz Lang makes of Gary Cooper a physicist and sends him to Switzerland to collect and bring home a foreign scientist who’s working on the atom bomb. When that scientist is killed by enemy agents Cooper goes to Italy to extract yet another scientist whose sympathies are with the Allied cause.

There’s are some amazing elements to Hide AND DAGGER that made it hard for me to warm up to this movie. Cooper (as Prof. Alvah Jasper) is, we’re told, working on the Manhattan Project when the OSS chief picks him because `he’ll know what to gawk for’, whatever that means. Maybe it means he can shriek the contrast between pitchblende and heavy water. You’d judge whoever was working on the Manhattan Project was a lot more indispensable in the lab than in the field, especially when about all he does, spy-wise, is conduct a good kidnapping. Heck, Richard Conte or even John Ireland could do that for you, and at half the sign – not that Conte or Ireland are in this one, but this movie doesn’t need or add to the luster of a star of Cooper’s stature. According to a biography of Lang, Mask AND DAGGER was intended to be Lang’s warning against atomic research. That would interpret why Lang has Prof. Jasper go on and on about the power contained in an apple – why, there’s enough energy locked in an apple to blow up this campus! This city, even! C&D was supposed to raze with an impassioned anti-atom speech by Jasper which, according to the Lang biography, was filmed and subsequently lop out and destroyed by the releasing company. While in Italian Jasper meets and becomes the charge of graceful young resistance fighter Gina (Lilli Palmer.) Gina might have been able to resist the charms of a Conte or an Ireland, but you don’t mix a splendid young with a superstar like Gary Cooper, leave them alone and not request sparks to hover, embers to glow and flames to erupt. The romantic subplot more or less hijacks half the movie and all the favorable stuff in the movie happens when Cooper and Palmer are alone. They bag the best scenes, including a charming night in a trustworthy house with a forlorn kitten yowling outside the door.

The pickle – problems, really – stem from the limp action. Lang handles the foreign agent paranoia stuff well enough. Things ain’t what they seem. Carelessly tossed matchboxes or a brace of nuns collecting for the abominable can be deadly menaces. There are a couple of well choreographed fight scenes, but the disaster never becomes imminent enough and the romance never quite believable enough to work. I judge Lang was trying for a lump in the throat when Gina and Jasper piece a `We’ll always have Paris’ scene. That scene leaves one a bit icy, and, as usually happens when such things fail, you resent the director for so blatantly trying to manipulate your emotions. It’s probably for the best that the studio loped off the anti-atom ending. One misfire ending is enough for any movie. This one didn’t need two of them.

Mask AND DAGGER is an okay movie, probably best marvelous for fans of Gary Cooper or Fritz Lang. I don’t know if there are a lot of Lilli Palmer fans out there, but she’s the best thing in this one. I’m a mountainous fan of Lang’s and I’m slowly completing my collection of his available titles. Lang’s deliberate arrive to storytelling doesn’t bother me noteworthy, but this one was a shrimp too insensible and diffused even for me. The print is in wonderful condition, the disk contains no extra features.

Why Highlander: The Source Sucks

With spinoffs including live action and animated films and television series, comic books, and more, the Highlander franchise has yielded its fair share of noble moments over the years, starting with the original film in 1986. But while Highlander 5: The Source has some cool special effects work and enough video game violence to enthrall adolescent boys, longtime fans agree that this made-for-TV flick is, to put it mildly, no Oscar contender. Adrian Paul, reprising the role he played in Highlander: Endgame (2000) and the Highlander TV series, is Duncan MacLeod, the ageless Scotsman hailing from the 16th Century. The storyline isn’t easy to decipher, but it has to do with the imminent cosmic alignment of the planets and other celestial bodies, which will lead to “the moment of the Source,” wherein lies the secret to the origin of MacLeod and his crew’s immortality. (A note about the film’s tagline, “The qust for mortality begins”: Seems that being immortal ain’t all it’s cracked up to be; not only can these guys die, but they are unable to breed, which is a big problem for Duncan and his mortal girlfriend, hence his plan to locate the Source and become, you know, a regular dude.) This is generic comic book stuff, taking place in a crumbling, Road Warrior-esqu world populated by characters with names like The Elder, The Guardian, The Watchers, and The Ancient One. The script, by Stephen Kelvin Watkins and Mark Bradley, is fraught with big, portentous statements, while director Brett Leonard seems more interested in staging the next fight sequnce than giving us a clu as to what’s actually going on. If this is the end of the Highlander story, and many seem to think it will be, fans had every right to hope for a more dignified death knell than The Source. –Sam Graham
